Epimerisation during activation produces a diastereomer that is mass-identical and only chromatographically separable. At this gradient length the separation exists, and 99.55 % is net of it.

Where two compounds elute within a third of a minute, a mass at this accuracy is what separates them. Retention alone would not have.
